Let me tell you who should really be happy about the Spanish election results: the French. The idiot wing of the American conservative movement has a new target for its infantile name-calling, which ought to take some pressure off France; expect the first "Boycott Spain!" sites to go up on the Web in the next few days, if they're not up already. (France, by the way, is apparently right there with the U.S. in the war on real terrorists -- there are 200 French troops looking for Taliban and al-Qaeda members in Afghanistan.)

It was obvious that the word "appeasement" would be flung around at Free Republic -- but here's CNN, in an online poll (on the right; scroll down), asking, "Are the election results in Spain a victory for terrorists?" (The results of this poll will undoubtedly be read on the air -- you might want to get a vote in, because the "yes" side is winning, big time.)

David Frum in National Review says, "Terrorism has won a mighty victory in Spain." Andrew Sullivan is more specific: He says this is "Bin Laden's Victory in Spain." Victor Davis Hanson writes, "If we were looking for Churchill to step from the rubble, we got instead Daladier." I love Atrios's summary of this argument:

The people of Spain voted out the party which failed to protect them from a terrorist attack, and this proves they aren't serious about fighting terrorism.
