Oh, and did you know that GOP Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma -- a medical doctor -- has put a hold on a breast-cancer research bill?

...As his staff put it, "We are already spending enough money on breast cancer."

Senator Coburn has singlehandedly decided that breast cancer and women's health just isn't a priority. His hold on The Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act (S. 757) means that Congress will leave town for October recess without passing this crucial legislation. The American people overwhelmingly support breast cancer research. With 66 Senate co-sponsors and 99 Senators agreeing to pass the bipartisan bill by unanimous consent, Senator Tom Coburn is the only reason this bill has not passed the Senate....

Nice. And odd, no? Because our Republican friends have told us that

Dr. Tom Coburn MD is a man of extraordinary virtue.

As an obstetrician in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Dr Tom Coburn had first hand cause for his unshakable understanding of the value of human life. All life, including (but not limited to) pre-born life. Dr. Coburn is nothing if not consistent and his value for life permeates his every action....

I guess there's a little asterisk there I can't see, for woman with tumors.

You remember Tom Coburn:

During the campaign, he said he favored the death penalty for abortion providers and that he had heard there was "rampant lesbianism" in Oklahoma schools. He called state legislators "crapheads" and raised the ire of Native Americans by questioning their federal assistance programs.

Maybe he's afraid some of those rampant lesbians will grow up to benefit from this research. Can't have that, can we?

(Another one from Norwegianity.)
